Spring 2021 newsletter

I hope this letter finds everyone healthy and full of hope as we continue life in the midst of a pandemic!  When I look around at the businesses struggling and the friends who have lost loved ones, I pray that they will see God in the midst of the valley.  Reaching his hand down to pull them out.  There’s a song we sing in church and my favorite verse is “When in valley low I look toward the mountain high, and behold my Saviour there leading in the fight. With his tender hand outstretched toward the valley low, guiding me, I can see, as I onward go”.  That visual stirs my heart and calms my nerves.  He’s a very present help in time of trouble.

NEW LOGO.. for now

I should mention our new logo!  At least, new for now.  When we started the idea of the farm, we knew we were going to be organic.  We started with our first logo years before opening that read that we were 100% organic.  We found the certifying agent we wanted to use and started purchasing all organic seeds and soil (which we still use).  Then Covid happened.  We started the farm in the midst of a pandemic.  None of the organic certifying companies will visit a farm during Covid.  So to stay out of jail (or in business) I decided to temporarily change our logo to stay compliant.  I’m still trying to convert everything over to the new logo but that’s the story in a nutshell.

NEW PRODUCTS

We added a few products since last year’s farmer’s markets so I wanted to get the whole lineup laid out for you of what we offer and why you need them:

Sunflower shoots – mild “romaine” flavor and crunch providing added iron, calcium and protein
Broccoli greens – are young broccoli plants that are rich in glucoraphanin, a precursor of sulforaphane. Preclinical studies suggest that sulforaphane, an isothiocyanate, has anticancer effects against prostate, breast, and urinary cancers. 1 ounce of broccoli greens has the same level of sulforaphane as 1.5 pounds of mature broccoli. Less is more!
Daikon Radish – add a little kick to your meal with one of the most nutritious! Rich in vitamins A, B, C, E, & K, folic acid, niacin, potassium, iron, phosphorus, pantothenic acid, calcium, magnesium, zinc, carotenes
Kale – kale in it’s tiny form is not bitter but a delicious add on to anything! Don’t like kale but KNOW it’s so good for you? Try it in a microgreen instead! It won’t take as much to increase your levels of calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, folate, vitamin A and C!
Arugula – you like the powerful punch of arugula? If so, you are going to LOVE it as a microgreen! Delicious and beautiful added to any salad, wrap, pasta dish, beans and rice, whatever!  Rich in calcium, potassium, folate, vitamins A and C
Spicy Salad mix – a mix of red and green mustards. Rich in vitamins A, K, C, E, thiamine, folate, riboflavin, magnesium, potassium, calcium, phosophorus and so much more!  The perfect punch for any wrap or salad.
Wheatgrass – juice this wonder green for added potassium, dietary fiber, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E (alpha tocopherol), vitamin K, thiamin, riboflavin, niacin, vitamin B6, pantothenic acid, iron, zinc, copper, manganese, selenium and protein. Don’t have a juicer? We will juice it for you the day we deliver!

FARMER’S MARKETS

We have held steady here on the farm.  We have had some high weeks and a few low but we are holding our own!  We are about to start Farmer’s markets next week.  We will be in different markets than last year and I know most of you met me at markets we may not be in this year.  Hopefully we will be close enough for a visit!  Here’s the lineup:

Monday – Montevallo from 3-6pm starting June and ending in August
Tuesday – Homewood from 5-8pm starting June and ending the first week of August
Wednesday – Vestavia Hills from 10-1pm starting May 12 and ending last week of August
Saturday – Eastchase in Montgomery from 7-12 starting May 15 and ending the last weekend of August

   Bring on the sweat!

We are so excited to be a part of these markets and spread the word about our mighty nutrition!  There is NO OTHER farm making home deliveries in our area and I love that we can provide this service.  There are several customers that would not be able to take part if we did not deliver to their homes.  As we grow with greenhouses and other produce, I pray we can continue this unique service.

PLANT BASED NUTRITION COUNSELING

My husband, Cliff, in the picture above, is a Certified Plant Based Nutrition Counselor as well as a Plant Based Physician’s Assistant.  If you see him for your physical he will recommend a plant based lifestyle to help you reduce your medications and inflammation.  He will tell you about the patients who have followed his guidelines and come back in with beautiful blood work and much less medications every month… as well as TONS OF energy!  If you are interested in his services you can reach him at cliffa74@gmail.com.   If you already have bloodwork he will review it with you and you can work together on the best plan.  If you do not, he can order it for you and proceed from there.  What do you have to lose?

MEAL PREP

At the end of 2019 I was hosting a series of Plant Based Meal Prep sessions out of my home.  As a certified Forks over Knives certified Culinary Chef, I would come up with a menu for the week and I had 5 spaces people could sign up for.  I would purchase all the ingredients, print out all the recipes and together we would batch cook for everyone to be able to bring home at least 5 servings of lunch and dinner for the week.  There were typically 3 recipes so you weren’t eating the same thing every day but could alternate throughout the week.  I tried to add something educational to the mix so customers were learning something as well.  When Covid hit no one was comfortable being in a home together so we stopped.  I’m thinking about bringing it back in the fall.  It’s $80/person or $150 for a couple.  It is literally everything you need to eat for the week except breakfast.  It was typically held on Saturday at the farm.  If anyone is interested in doing this in the fall please respond to this email and let me know.  It was a lot of fun and everyone enjoyed the yummy plant based meals.

Sunflower Guacamole

I found this on alive.com and thought my customers would like a good recipe to try with their sunflower microgreens!  Sunflower is packed with so many great nutrients and adding in some avocado is icing on the cake 🙂

Sunflower Microgreens Guacamole

2 avocados
juice of 1/2 lime
1/4 tsp salt
2/3 c roughly chopped sunflower microgreens
1/4 c finely chopped red onion
1/2 jalapeno, finely chopped

Place avocado, lime juice and salt in a bowl and mash to a chunky consistency.  Add in microgreens, onion and jalapeno and stir to combine.

You can find this and other plant based recipes on my blog at HERE!

See you soon!
